How Much Should I Bet? Unit Sizing for Recreational Bettors

If you only fix one leak this month, fix stake size. Recreational bettors rarely go broke from one bad read. They go broke from betting like every game is the Super Bowl.

This is not investment advice and it is not a promise you will profit. It is a survival framework so your entertainment budget can absorb variance.

Step 1: Define a real bankroll

Your bankroll is money you can lose without touching rent, bills, or emergency savings. If that number is uncomfortable to say out loud, it is too high.

Write it down. Example: $1,000 betting bankroll. Everything else is out of scope.

Step 2: Make 1 unit = 1% (start there)

For most recreational bettors, 1 unit = 1% of bankroll. On a $1,000 roll, that is $10.

Why percent, not "I usually bet $50"? Because a flat dollar amount ignores whether you are winning, losing, or quietly escalating.

A simple default:

  • Standard play: 1 unit
  • Stronger play: 2 units
  • Rare max: 3 units
  • Hard ceiling: never more than about 5% on a single wager
  • If a bet needs 10% of your roll to "feel worth it," the problem is the bet — or the boredom — not the unit chart.

Step 3: Flat bet until your process is honest

Fancy sizing formulas assume you know your edge. Most recreational bettors do not. Flat 1–2 unit betting keeps you alive long enough to learn whether your process has any edge at all.

Chasing (doubling after losses) and revenge parlays are how bankrolls die on schedule.

Step 4: Separate "fun money" from "process money"

If you want a $5 same-game parlay for the game you are watching, label it entertainment and cap it. Do not pretend it is the same strategy as your tracked 1-unit sides. Mixing them in your head destroys both the fun and the feedback.

Step 5: Track units, not vibes

Log stake, odds, result, and sport. Review units won/lost and ROI, not just "I feel like I am up." A week of winners at terrible prices can still be a losing process.
